that will never work

My Thanksgiving reading this year was the book about the story of Netflix called, "That Will Never Work" by Marc Randolph.

It's a great origin story. He dispels the entrepreneurship myth that you just go in your garage or dorm room with some friends, have a light bulb moment and then boom! The next thing you know you are Facebook.

As you know - for spiritual entrepreneurs - we are never short on ideas. But the right idea takes work. And it takes a team to pull it off.

These guys wanted you to be able to rent DVD's FROM A COMPUTER before DVD's were even popular, in the late 90's, and get them in the mail, and return them whenever you wanted.

That would never work.

Marc says, "In Silicon Valley (and everywhere) you have to assume that Nobody Knows Anything. In other words, there is no rhyme or reason why some ideas catch and some don't. If Nobody Knows Anything, then you have to trust yourself. You have to test yourself. And you have to be willing to fail."

I have to confess the text I sent to the current stewards of the diffuse network from a pew Sunday morning in the local church service this week:

"Confession: I'm sitting in the church sanctuary and today is hanging of the greens with call and response for the whole service. Everyone has a part, all are griping in one way or another. Everyone is confused about their part. And all I can think is how much I hate services like this. Is this church??"

Now you can see my true colors! My 18 year old son came with us because he was home from college. My kid loves Jesus, but cringed his way through the service.

We can do better.

Diffuse network is full of people like you who are out there doing better. You are introducing the bride of Christ (the name that Jesus gave his church, his very own spouse!) to all people in all places in all kinds of cool and new ways.

Some may say, that'll never work. We say, grab a team, work hard, keep working hard, make it happen. As a spiritual entrepreneur, that's what you do.

Don't give up. We are here for you. The world needs you to keep innovating.

It can work. It will work.

Join us for our yearly gathering in Charleston to be surrounded by amazing entrepreneurs like yourself. If you haven't RSVP'ed yet, please do so below.

Shine like stars in the universe is the theme. February 6 - 8. See you there.
